The Widder Hotel in Zurich:
A synthesis of the arts between heritage and modernity
Situated in the heart of the historic district of Zurich, The Widder Hotel fascinates visitors from all over the world through its distinctive ambience – and since the opening of this very special hotel in 1995 its attraction never fails. The Five-star property unfolds itself in an ensemble of nine historical residences from the Middle Ages, whose unique flair has been combined with timeless elements in meticulous restauration. The UBS, owner of the estate, developed the exclusive property in an ten years elaborate renovation project. The Widder Hotel is a member of „Leading Small Hotels of the World“ as well as „Swiss Deluxe Hotels“ and „design hotels“.
Each of the Widder Hotel's nine houses was once a living space of its own, and even today not one room is like the other. Under the direction of Swiss Star-Architect and Interior Designer Mrs Tilla Theus hundreds of builders and artisans embedded the medieval heritage in her inspired room concept, which releases new, surprising details and perspectives. At the Widder Hotel attractive contrasts fuse into an harmonious composition, making it one of Zurich’s leading Hotels for business and leisure travelers alike.
The Widder Hotel owes its name to one of his nine houses: the historical „Haus zur Widderzunft“, home of the butcher's guild since 1401, is still today the meeting place at traditional events.
The interior designer of the Widder Hotel met the challenges of the heterogeneous building ensemble in a truly skillful manner with individually furnished guestrooms and suites, that perfect the profile of the hotel as a masterpiece between heritage and modernity.
Original furniture pieces from the time of the Biedermeier were aligned with valuable carpets; gothic window alcoves harmonized with modern support pillars and elaborate ornamental fire places meticulously restored. There are historical “Grisaille“-paintings on the walls of a room, refering to the former guild hall from 1678, while other rooms are decorated with precious wooden inlays or delicate nature scenes from the Renaissance. Modern Classics such as chairs and day beds by Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Eileen Gray, Charles and Roy Eames fit artfully into Tilla Theus' extraordinary interior design. The demanding claim to perfect each single detail remains the link between the epochs.
Modern equipment complements the furnishings in the 49 guestrooms: Each providing two telefone lines, fax- and wireless LAN-connections. The audio system from Bang & Olufsen offers an inimitable sound experience. Cable TV, minibar, personal safe and a sophisticated cooling-heating system are standard in each room.
At the Widder Hotel precious antiques, masterpieces and works of art of the world's renown, mostly contemporary artists underline the property's distinctive accents and features. Paintings and sculptures adorn the lobby, the restaurants, conference rooms as well as all guest rooms. In this environment the Widder Hotel's masterpieces can be experienced in a totally private atmosphere, like no museum can ever provide. Without loosing its claim of artistic autonomy, the collection complements the interior design through careful composition. Paintings such as Max Bill’s abstract „rays of blue in yellow“, Michael Gasser’s blue dream of „Nikkaia“, Serge Poliakoff’s „Composition bleue et rouge“ or the exclusively created work by American Pop Art artist Robert Rauschenberg express the sophistication of the collection. Some of the works represent the heraldic animal of the hotel such as Andy Warhol’s „Ram“, Roberto Benazzi's ram-“sculpture 2 Homme“ as well as the untitled abstract reference by Sophie Taeuber-Arp.
Meetings, Conferences, Banquets
The Widder Hotel provides eight elegant appointed, individual rooms for functions and events for up to 200 participants. All rooms, lounges and halls offer a state-of-the-art infrastructure and can be equipped with the most modern presentation technics.
The Zunft Chammer, which houses the guild's butcher museum, gives receptions and gatherings a highly unusual ambience. The permanent exhibition, which encompasses historical tools, creates a truly extraordinary room experience. If desired a guided tour can be arranged.
Original furniture and lamps from the Villa Schwarzwald in Vienna by Art Nouveau architect Adolf Loos coins the atmosphere of the Loos Stube. The analogy between wall-, ceiling- and floor-paneling required a master stroke of the artisans. Selected works by Augusto Giacometti grace this room ensemble, which offers a magical view across the Rennweg.
The historical ceiling beams in the Erzberg Stuben form a surprising contrast to the modern birch lamellaes. One also finds a fascinating dialogue between old and contemporary paintings such as the gothic original plaster adorned by cornice paintings which "communicates" with the avantgarde wall mural by Matias Spescha. Dividable through a partition into two separate rooms, the Erzberg Stube is the perfect setting for presentations, meetings and cocktail receptions.
The business center offers two state-of-the-art work stations free of charge. PCs are equipped with wireless lan and provide all current programs in word processing and for presentations. High-speed-Internet access is also available for laptop users. DVD- and CD-burners, scanner, colour printer and copy machine complete the services. The Business Center not only provides outstanding standards in technology equipment, but also in its interior design, created by hotel architect Mrs Tilla Theus. Open daily from 6:30 tos 23:00 as well as on request. During the week from 9:00 to 18:00 an expert IT-Concierge is available.
The Widder Restaurant and its Turmstübli are celebrated as one of the best hotel cuisines in Zurich. Delicious Swiss specialities are also served in the Wirtschaft zur Schtund.
The Widder Hotel's culinary experience starts in the stylish atmosphere of the Widder restaurants with sophisticated table settings and precious chinaware, on which the newest creations are presented by the Executive Chef.
In the corner house at the Widdergasse, residence of the butcher’s guild since the Middle Ages and today home to the Widder Restaurant, the guild members still meet even today. Here they celebrate their traditional Martini feast or use it as their base during the „Sechseläuten“. The yearly spring festival of the Zurich guilds bids farewell to the winter with a colourful procession in historical costumes.
But not only guild members are welcomed guests in the Widder Restaurant, the Turmstübli and Wirtschaft zur Schtund. Hotel guests and visitors enjoy also the fabulous „Wytresor“ - the wine cellar of the Widder Restaurant, which offers a precious selection of fine international wines as well as an exquisite range from the region.
In decor and furnishings all three restaurants combine modern elements with the cosiness of historical wooden ceilings and pillars. For instance in the Turmstübli the remainders of a wall mural were discovered during the renovation, revealing a tiny flushing owl from the 15th century as most charming eye-catcher.
The light and airy breakfast room is situated on the upper floor of the Steinhaus, the center of the hotel. With the meticulous restauration of the Steinhaus, the most important witness of the Augustiner-quarter's history was preserved. It is one of the rare relics of buildings, that formed the district in the Middle Ages. From here one not only has a fantastic view onto the circumjacents courtyard facades but also directly into the Zurich sky through the retractable glas ceiling, which is open during the summer months.
Widder Bar / Jazz
Sophisticated Live-Jazz evenings is the distinguished mark of the Widder Bar since its opening. Every year in spring and autumn guests experience the appearances of world-famous jazz musicians such as the singer Abby Lincoln and pianist Hank Jones, while enjoying signature cocktails, a wide variety of fine champagnes or one of the ingenious spirits. The Widder Bar's „Library of Spirits“ offers more than 800 spirits and a sensational collection of 250 different Single Malt Whiskys. Highly popular with Zurich's society, the bar's interior is characterized by Raffael Benazzi's modern ram sculpture, but also by the cosy architectural charm of old wooden beams from the year 1291, which is a rare example of construction techniques in the Middle Ages.
The comprehensive hotel library „Turicensia“ is located on the ground floor of the Steinhaus. Its inventory is dedicated predominantly to Zurich. Hundreds of coffee-table books, art- and history-guides as well as selected poetry and fiction offer the reader a wide variety of the city and its surroundings.
Fitness UNDER RECONSTRUCTION UNTIL SUMMER 2015
The most idyllic fitness area however is in closest vicinity to the hotel: Jogging tours around the Zurich lake are highly popular with Widder guests.
The Widder Hotel lies in the heart of the Augustiner quarter, which offers all benefits of a central location within the historic section of the town, and is situated in immediate neighborhood to the prestigious Bahnhofsstraße. Discovery tours through the historic, cultural or commercial Zurich can be ventured easily by foot. Guests arriving by car make use of the Hotel's parking garage. The Widder Hotel also offers limousine transfers to and from the airport.
